Reedy Point Bridge

As a part of our on-going support of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bridge safety and inspection program, Fish & Associates, Inc. was retained by USACEPhiladelphia District to develop a pilot demonstration program for the use of Phased Array (PA) ultrasonic testing to evaluate the condition of bridge pins and to identify and document internal or hidden flaws within bridge gusset plates.  Under this contract, we researched current PA technology, drafted procedures for the use of PA to scan connector pins, bearings, and gusset plates, developed arrangement, application, and calibration of transducers, developed specifications for required equipment, and documented the application of that equipment during testing, including interpretation of results, qualifications of test personnel, and recording of results.  The program included a field-testing demonstration on the long span, propped cantilever Reedy Point Bridge, that carries Route 9 over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.
